Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of her two appearances on Roseanne. However, her parents did not permit her to perform until she was an adult due to the negative effects that stress could have on their daughter. Perry claimed that she was shy to act during high school, but started acting at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. Perry had the opportunity to secure minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. Homesickness, however, caused her to move to California to return, where she started performing in the stage. She performed on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in 2013. She performed with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, she starred in her own recurring part on The ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. Also, she was cast on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. Despite having a family connection to the character she received the role through an audition.
